"We lived in the barrack yards those days..."
A "Barrack Yard" is what they called the houses provided for those who worked on the plantation. They could range from claustrophobic galvanized shelters to individual huts called "tapas houses" - Tapas Houses were distinctive because its walls where plastered with a mud mixed with cow dung as binding agent.
