In 1971, Chucklan was trying to balance the demands of her bakery
with the new demands of married life.
Her father had died six years earlier, leaving her with the responsibility for her younger stepbrothers and stepsisters. He left behind a bakery and mountains of debt. Chucklan had fought hard to keep the bakery and make it profitable - no small task for a woman at this time, and an even greater challenge for a woman who could not, at the time, read or write.
